ACADEMIC TEXTS
- refers to a critical, objective and specialized text written by experts or professionals in a given field ( medicine, architecture, education, etc.) using formal language.
Characteristics of Academic Texts
- Objective – ideas or claims in the text are based on facts or solid evidence
- Formal – the language used is formal standard English and avoiding slang words/expressions
- Precise – facts and figures are given accurately and specifically
- Complex – written language is more complex than spoken language
- Explicit – the writer makes connections of the various parts through the use of different signal words
- Accurate – uses vocabulary accurately
- Responsible – uses appropriate citations for references used in the text
- Organized– follows a certain structure ( form) based on the type of text
- Well-planned – usually takes place after research and evaluation
