 ACADEMIC TEXTS

  • refers to a critical, objective and specialized text written by experts or professionals in a given field  ( medicine, architecture, education, etc.) using formal language.

Characteristics of Academic Texts
  • Objective – ideas or claims in the text are based on facts or solid evidence
  • Formal – the language used is formal standard English and avoiding slang words/expressions
  • Precise – facts and figures are given accurately and specifically
  • Complex – written language is more complex than spoken language
  • Explicit – the writer makes connections of the various parts through the use of different signal words
  • Accurate – uses vocabulary accurately
  • Responsible – uses appropriate citations for references used in the text
  • Organized– follows a certain structure ( form) based on the type of text
  • Well-planned – usually takes place after research and evaluation 
Activity 1 Analyzing a Sample Academic Text

Read the sample academic text given through the link and explain in not less than 3 paragraphs the characteristics that are present. (Refer to the characteristics of an academic text.)
